Heroes That Counter Yena

Yena Yena is a dual-weapon fighter played in the Dark Slayer lane or the jungle. Her ultimate Full Moon Full Moon lets her swap between Twin Blades and Moon Blade, with each form replacing her entire skill set: skill 1 Crescent Strike Crescent Strike is either a two-part dash slash or a 2-second charged slash; skill 2 Spinning Sickle Spinning Sickle either throws spinning twin blades that slow, or slashes 4 times with knockbacks and a launch on the final strike. Her passive Lunar Phase Lunar Phase gives Twin Blades bonus movement speed and the Moonslash effect, which silences and slows the target at 5 stacks, while Moon Blade trades attack speed for damage. Most importantly, Yena is CC immune and damage immune while casting skills. Her weakness lies in the downtime between skills, when she has no protection at all; once silenced, she has nothing left. Yena’s counters are Marja, Omen, Arthur, Bolt Baron, Skud in the Dark Slayer lane and jungle, Lauriel in the mid lane, and Baldum, Thane in the support role.

Items to Counter Yena

Sonic Boots

With the Accelerate passive, every basic attack aimed at you deals 10% less damage. Yena throws out lots of basic attacks between skills: Moon Blade form trades attack speed for bigger damage, while Sweeping Moon Slash boosts her attack speed for 5 straight seconds. With 60 movement speed on top, these are the boots for heroes who have to trade with her in the Dark Slayer lane.

Mail of Pain

The Backlash passive returns 5% of damage taken as true damage, decreasing with distance. Yena always slashes at close range and many of her skills hit multiple times, like the 4 strikes of Quad Moon Slash or the spinning twin blades, so she takes quite a lot of it back. Activate Counterstrike to raise it to 25% for 3 seconds the moment she starts her combo.

Blade of Eternity

The Revive passive brings you back to life after 2 seconds where you fell with 2100 – 3500 HP, usable twice per match, plus 10% bonus damage dealt. Yena usually has to dump all her skills and swap forms to take you down; when you get back up, she is in her downtime with no CC immunity, the perfect moment to counterattack.

Arctic Orb

Activating Seal makes you invulnerable and immobile for 1.5 seconds, then grants a shield for 1 second. Mages should pop it the moment Yena casts her charged slash or starts the knockback slash chain, so her whole damage burst whiffs and her skills go on cooldown.

How to Counter Yena in 1vs1

Dodge the first dash: In Twin Blades form, Crescent Strike Crescent Strike only lets Yena dash a second time if the first dash hits. Keep your distance and move diagonally away from the dash direction; dodge the first strike and she loses her chase rhythm entirely.

CC her during the downtime: Her passive Lunar Phase Lunar Phase grants Yena CC immunity and damage immunity while casting skills. Don’t throw stuns or knock-ups while she is slashing; wait until the skill has just ended before you commit.

Read her blade form to predict her skills: Twin Blades gives Yena bonus movement speed and stacks Moonslash; at 5 stacks you get silenced and slowed, so back off before the stacks fill up. Moon Blade swings slower but hits harder, and its charged slash takes 2 seconds, enough time for you to step out of its path.

Watch out for the fourth strike: In Moon Blade form, Spinning Sickle Spinning Sickle slashes 4 times, and the final strike launches every target. If you’ve already taken the first two hits, use your escape skill immediately.

How to Counter Yena in Team Fights

Protect your carries: Yena has two dashes plus movement speed from her Dual Blades form to dive your backline. Supports like Baldum Baldum or Thane Thane should stay close to the marksman and mage, ready to lock her down or knock her away as soon as she finishes a skill.

Silence is the key: If she can’t cast skills, Yena has no CC immunity and can’t switch blade forms either. A single silence from Sword of Justice Sword of Justice in a team fight turns her into an easy kill.

Spread out against the final slash: The final slash of Spinning Sickle Spinning Sickle knocks away every enemy in front of her. Backliners shouldn’t bunch up right behind the frontline, or the whole group will get knocked away.

Kite her if you’re not tanky enough: Unless you’re a tank or a fighter who counters her, keep your distance and attack from range instead of trading in melee with a Yena who has all her skills up.

Tips for countering Yena

Strengths to Watch Out For

  • CC immunity and damage immunity throughout every skill cast.
  • Two blade forms with separate skill sets: mobile Twin Blades, high-damage Moon Blade.
  • Moonslash at 5 stacks silences and slows the target.
  • Plenty of CC: slows, knockbacks and the launch from Quad Moon Slash.

Weaknesses to Exploit

  • CC immunity only applies while casting skills; the gaps between skills are very easy to lock down.
  • Vulnerable to silence, since being unable to cast skills means losing her protection.
  • Her second dash is only available if the first one hits.
  • All of her damage is physical, and she has to get close to be effective.
