Heroes That Counter Billow

Billow Billow is a jungle assassin who lives on speed and finishing blows. Skill 1 Wavebreaker Wavebreaker dashes forward and then dives underwater, granting movement speed that gets even higher when low-HP targets are nearby; in the river, the Sea Monster state lasts indefinitely. Skill 2 Space Split Space Split applies a mark for chasing, empowers his basic attacks and heals him, while his ultimate Death From Below Death From Below slows and then pushes victims to the end of his dash path. His passive Hunter Hunter deals bonus true damage to low-HP enemies, making Billow extremely dangerous once opponents have lost HP. In exchange, his kit has no crowd control immunity or damage immunity, his healing depends on landing skills, and he struggles to burst opponents who are still at full HP. Hard crowd control, roots and tanky enough heroes are the best way to stop him. Billow’s counters include Zanis, Rourke, Enzo in the jungle, Omen, Biron, Marja in the Dark Slayer Lane, Aleister, Veera in the Mid Lane, Arum, Mina, Gildur at Support and Stuart in the Abyssal Dragon Lane.

Mail of Pain

Retaliate returns 5% of damage taken as true damage to the attacker. Billow always has to get close to fight, so the effect barely loses strength over distance; activate Counterstrike to raise it to 25% for 3 seconds right as he dives in with Space Split Space Split , and every bite will cost him his own HP.

Blade of Eternity

Revive brings you back to life on the spot after 2 seconds with 2100 – 3500 HP, usable twice per match. Billow usually dumps all his skills to secure the kill, and when you get back up he’s out of skills and has no low-HP target left for his passive Hunter Hunter to work on.

Arctic Orb

Activating Seal makes you invulnerable for 1.5 seconds, then grants an extra shield. Mages should press it as soon as Death From Below Death From Below pushes them toward the enemy team or right when Billow catches up, so both his damage combo and the true damage from his passive hit nothing.

Death Sickle

Divine Intervention grants immunity to lethal damage and 0.75 seconds of invincibility, plus 25% movement speed and 25% attack speed; after carrying it for 4 minutes, the invincibility lasts 1.5 seconds. The true damage finisher from Hunter Hunter slides right off you, and marksmen instantly get attack speed to fight back.

How to Counter Billow in 1vs1

Keep your HP at a safe level: His passive Hunter Hunter deals bonus true damage and Wavebreaker Wavebreaker grants extra movement speed when there are low-HP targets near Billow. Don’t stay in lane or in the jungle once your HP is low, because that’s exactly when he’s strongest.

Be careful near the river: In the river, Billow’s Sea Monster form has no time limit. When he’s missing from the map, avoid crossing the river alone and keep the lane close to your turret.

Don’t stand alone against his opening dash: Billow usually engages with Wavebreaker Wavebreaker and then chases with Space Split Space Split . If you’re not a strong duelist, keep your distance and always have a dash or CC ready to respond.

Counterattack once he’s out of skills: Billow has no CC immunity or shields. When he’s used up all his dashes and you still have enough HP, turn around and fight, because at that point he has no quick way out.

How to Counter Billow in Team Fights

CC him the moment he surfaces: Use stuns, roots or suppression such as Magic Barrier Magic Barrier from Aleister Aleister or Snare Snare from Arum Arum right as Billow lands. If he loses the timing on his first dash, he loses his whole combo.

Protect the backline: Death From Below Death From Below can push your carry to the end of the dash path, right into the middle of the enemy team. Supports and fighters should stay close to marksmen and mages to pull them back or block Billow.

Build survival items: Death Sickle, Blade of Eternity or Arctic Orb make Billow’s finishing blow miss, giving your allies time to counterattack.

Don’t chase toward the river: Once Billow has retreated, don’t follow him into the river, where he keeps his Sea Monster form the longest and can easily turn around and bite back.

Tips for Countering Billow

  • His ultimate slows and knocks back the victim, separating carries from their team.
