Heroes That Counter Quillen

Quillen Quillen is a jungle assassin who specializes in ambushes. His passive Spinal Stab Spinal Stab makes every attack and skill from behind an enemy a guaranteed crit, but frontal attacks can never crit. Skill 1 Mutilate Mutilate slashes twice in a flash, skill 2 Decimate Decimate dashes in and marks an enemy for 10 seconds; every hit on the marked victim slows them for 1 second and reduces cooldowns, while the victim also deals less damage to Quillen. His ultimate Assassinate Assassinate makes him roll and then go invisible for 3 seconds, gaining movement speed and healing; assists or kills on enemy heroes also reset all his skill cooldowns. Quillen’s weaknesses are that he must reveal himself at point-blank range to deal damage, he has no CC immunity, and he loses almost all his power when forced into a head-on fight. He hates stealth-detection items, hard CC and survival items the most. Counters to Quillen include Zanis, Enzo, Fennik in the Jungle, Omen in the Dark Slayer lane, Aleister, Lauriel in the Mid lane, Arum, Thane, Gildur as Support and Stuart in the Abyssal Dragon lane.

Items to Counter Quillen

Death Sickle

Divine Intervention makes you immune to lethal damage and invincible for 0.75 seconds, plus 25% movement speed and 25% attack speed; after carrying it for 4 minutes, the invincibility lasts up to 1.5 seconds. When Quillen unloads crits from behind, this item keeps you alive through the decisive hit and gives you enough time to turn around or escape.

Blade of Eternity

Rebirth revives you on the spot after 2 seconds with 2100 – 3500 HP, up to 2 times per match. Quillen usually dumps all his skills on one target; when you get back up, he’s at close range and easy for your teammates to catch.

Arctic Orb

Seal makes you invulnerable for 1.5 seconds, then grants an additional shield. Press it as soon as Quillen dashes in with Decimate Decimate so his entire first wave of crits hits nothing, and when the effect ends, turn to face him so you don’t get struck from behind.

Terra Mystic Eye

Activating Mystic Eye grants true vision of the surrounding area for 4 seconds and deals magic damage twice, each equal to 8% of nearby enemy heroes’ current HP, plus a 50% slow. It’s the most direct way to pull Quillen out of the stealth from Assassinate Assassinate before he can pick a target.

Mail of Pain

Backlash returns 5% of the damage taken as true damage, calculated before reductions, so the bigger Quillen’s crits are, the more HP he loses himself. Activate Counterstrike to raise it to 25% for 3 seconds right when he closes in; this item suits fighters and tanks standing guard for the carry best.

How to Counter Quillen in a 1vs1

Always face him: The passive Spinal Stab Spinal Stab only lets Quillen crit when attacking from behind; head-on attacks never crit. Don’t turn your back and run unless you have a dash that goes over walls; turning to face him and fighting back is safer.

Keep your back to a wall: When he closes in on you in the jungle or near a lane, move along the wall so it’s harder for him to get behind you.

Be careful when marked: For the 10 seconds you’re marked by Decimate Decimate , you deal less damage to Quillen and get slowed every time he hits you. At this point, fall back toward your teammates instead of trying to trade HP one-on-one.

Build armor early: All of Quillen’s skills deal physical damage. An early armor item like Mail of Pain helps you survive his first burst.

How to Counter Quillen in Teamfights

Protect your marksman and mage: Quillen always looks for a way around to the backline. Supports and fighters should stand next to squishy heroes so that Thane Thane or Omen Omen can respond the moment he reappears.

Reveal stealth: Supports should carry a Mystic Eye item such as Terra Mystic Eye and activate it when a teamfight breaks out or when you suspect Quillen is sneaking in from the flanks.

Save your hard CC: Don’t dump all your stuns and knock-ups on the enemy tank. Save Judgment Judgment from Enzo Enzo , Valiant Charge Valiant Charge from Thane Thane or Snare Snare from Arum Arum for when Quillen reappears.

Don’t stay alone on low HP: Assassinate Assassinate gives Quillen stealth, movement speed and HP regen, and every kill or assist resets the cooldowns of all his skills. Don’t stick around clearing minions when your HP is low, or you’ll become the stepping stone he uses to sweep the rest of your team.

Tips for Countering Quillen

Strengths to Watch Out For

  • Every hit from behind an enemy is a guaranteed crit.
  • Ultimate grants 3 seconds of stealth, bonus movement speed and HP regen.
  • Kills or assists on enemy heroes reset the cooldowns of all skills.
  • The mark from skill 2 slows the victim and reduces the damage they deal to Quillen.

Weaknesses to Exploit

  • Head-on attacks never crit.
  • Base crit damage is only 125%, so he needs crit items to really hurt.
  • No CC immunity, so getting crowd-controlled after reappearing is very hard to escape.
  • Must reappear at close range to attack, making him easy to expose with Mystic Eye items.
