Items That Counter Errol
Whenever you deal damage, the Judgment passive cuts the target’s healing by 40% for 3 seconds, whether from a basic attack or a skill. Errol heals from
Ghostscythe
,
Boneshaver
and Demon Talon lifesteal, so physical heroes should get this item early so he can’t heal back from your trades.
The Unyielding active grants 35% damage reduction for 3 seconds and can be used even while crowd controlled, so when you’re immobilized by
Ghostscythe
or knocked back by
Boneshaver
you can still reduce the follow-up damage. The Sluggish passive slows the first hero hit by a skill by 30% and reduces their damage by 20% for 3 seconds, very useful when trading HP with Errol in the Clash Lane.
Every time you deal damage, Spear of Longinus reduces the victim’s armor by 6%, stacking up to 4 times for 5 seconds. Errol likes to drag fights out to lifesteal, so the longer the trade, the thinner his armor gets and the harder your physical hits land. Great for fighters and assassins who attack in multiple consecutive rounds.
The Freeze passive slows the target’s movement speed by 5% – 10% for 1.5 seconds with each basic attack or skill, stacking up to 2 times; Chill deals bonus physical damage with a 3-second cooldown. For marksmen, the constant slow makes it hard for Errol to close in and basic attack to build Demon Talon, and gives you more time to back away from the slash of
Boneshaver
.
The Revive passive brings your hero back to life on the spot after 2 seconds with 2100 – 3500 HP, with a 150-second cooldown and only working 2 times per match; Battle Spirit also increases damage dealt by 10%. Once Errol has burned
Ghostscythe
,
Boneshaver
and
Demon Claw
to take you down, the moment you revive is your chance to counterattack while his skills are on cooldown.
Activating Seal makes you invulnerable and immobile for 1.5 seconds, then grants a shield for 1 second; 75-second cooldown. Press it right as the vortex of
Demon Claw
is about to explode, or when Errol has full Demon Talon stacks and swings
Boneshaver
, so the knock-up and doubled damage hit nothing.
How to Counter Errol in a 1vs1
Count his Demon Talon stacks:
Blood Drinker
adds 1 stack per basic attack that lands and only lasts 5 seconds. Once he has 5 stacks, his next
Boneshaver
deals double damage, double lifesteal and knocks back, so back off or step out of the straight-line slash instead of standing there trading.
Dodge the Ghostscythe dash:
Ghostscythe
only immobilizes, heals and reduces its cooldown when the dash hits. Move sideways when you see Errol heading toward you; a missed dash is the best window to counterattack.
Get anti-heal before going for the kill: Both skill 1 and skill 2 heal based on missing HP, so the lower Errol’s HP, the more he heals. Build
Curse of Death
before diving in to finish him.
Don’t chase while Demon Claw is up:
Demon Claw
gives him 2 seconds of invulnerability and a self-chosen landing spot, enough to turn around and knock up whoever is chasing.
How to Counter Errol in Teamfights
Watch where Demon Claw lands: During the 2 seconds of invulnerability from
Demon Claw
, all damage and crowd control on Errol are wasted. Instead, the whole team should spread out so the vortex when he lands only knocks up one person.
Save CC for when he lands: Right after Demon Claw, Errol is standing in the middle of your team without CC immunity. This is the moment to throw stuns and knock-ups from
Thane
or
Zuka
, then burst him down before he can heal with
Boneshaver
.
Protect the backline:
Ghostscythe
immobilizes and then teleports right next to the target, which is very dangerous for marksmen and mages. Supports should stay close to the carry; mages can hold
Arctic Orb
for this dash.
Cut the team’s healing: Errol stays alive through lifesteal from Demon Marks and healing from his skills, so at least one person should have an item with the Judgment passive so extended fights no longer favor him.
Tips for Countering Errol
Strengths to Watch Out For
- Strong lifesteal from Demon Talon, plus healing based on missing HP from skill 1 and skill 2.
- Ghostscythe both immobilizes and blinks right onto the target, making it very hard to escape at close range.
- Demon Claw grants 2 seconds of invulnerability and a self-chosen landing spot, both initiating fights and dodging damage.
- With full Demon Talon, Boneshaver deals double damage and knocks enemies back.
Weaknesses to Exploit
- His strongest knockback needs 5 full Demon Talon stacks, and the stacks expire after 5 seconds.
- His skills must hit to immobilize and heal; a missed dash breaks his rhythm.
- Very weak against anti-heal items and true damage.
- No CC immunity after landing, so he’s easily locked down inside the enemy team.
