Heroes That Counter Elsu

Elsu Elsu is a sniper marksman who likes to stand far back: his passive Stalk Stalk converts crit chance into physical attack and camouflages him near cliff walls after 5 seconds out of combat, Sentinel Sentinel plants a device that grants vision and increases armor pierce for every second he stands still, Snipe Snipe aims for 2 seconds to shoot farther and more accurately and slow the first hero hit, while Disengage Disengage rolls backward then fires forward to escape. Elsu’s weakness is that he must stand still to be strong: he can’t move while aiming, and running away loses his armor pierce stacks. Apart from Disengage, he has almost no way out when dived. Mobile heroes, long-range crowd control and reveal skills are what Elsu hates most. Effective counters to Elsu Elsu are Violet, Slimz in the Abyssal Dragon lane, Helen, Gildur as support, Paine, Aoi, Nakroth in the jungle, Yue, Iggy, Raz in the mid lane and Max in the Dark Slayer lane.

Items to counter Elsu

Mail of Pain

The Backlash passive of Mail of Pain Mail of Pain reflects 5% of damage taken as true damage, based on the original damage; activating Counterattack raises it to 25% for 3 seconds. The effect does fall off with distance, but by at most 50%, so every big Snipe Snipe shot from Elsu Elsu still gets partly sent back.

Frost Cape

After casting a skill, Frost Cape Frost Cape makes your next basic attack deal an extra 100 (+30% physical attack) physical damage splashing within 3m, plus a 30% slow (20% for ranged users) for 0.5 seconds. Use it right after Elsu Elsu lands with Disengage Disengage , when he’s counting on the movement speed boost to escape.

Death Sickle

The Divine Intervention passive of Death Sickle Death Sickle makes you immune to lethal damage and grants 0.75 seconds of invincibility, plus 25% movement speed and 25% attack speed; after carrying it for 4 minutes, the invincibility lasts up to 1.5 seconds (120-second cooldown). It’s your insurance against a finishing Snipe Snipe shot when you’re low on HP.

How to counter Elsu in the laning phase

Don’t let Elsu stand still comfortably: For every second he stays in place, the passive of Sentinel Sentinel grants Elsu armor penetration, stacking up to 5 times. Whether you choose to dive him or keep your distance, keep forcing him to move.

Zigzag while he aims: Snipe Snipe needs 2 seconds to aim and only hits the first hero in its path. Keep changing direction, or have your tank stand in front of your marksman.

Step on Sentinels: The devices last quite a while and reveal a very wide area, but they’re disabled when an enemy hero steps on them. Destroy them so Elsu loses vision and can’t see you coming.

Go in after Disengage: Disengage Disengage is his only escape, and the movement speed bonus on landing disappears immediately if Elsu basic attacks or casts a skill. Right after he’s used it, he has almost nowhere left to run.

How to counter Elsu in teamfights

Clear vision before diving in: Sentinel reveals an area within 600 – 1000 range, so Elsu often spots you from very far away. Step on nearby devices first, then flank around behind him or wait for him in a bush.

Check the walls: After 5 seconds out of combat, standing near a wall camouflages Elsu and boosts his movement speed. Skills that reveal or scan enemy heroes help you find him before the first shot lands.

Body-block for your carries: Snipe Snipe only hits the first hero, so the tank or support should walk ahead of the marksman and mage when moving into a fight.

Focus Elsu first: Elsu is squishy and his basic attacks can’t crit, so he’s very weak when dived. Lock him down first and don’t let him poke your team for too long.

Tips for Countering Elsu

Strengths to Watch Out For

  • Snipe Snipe shoots very far and slows the first hero hit.
  • Sentinel Sentinel provides wide vision, stores 2 devices and allows up to 3 on the map.
  • The passive Stalk Stalk grants camouflage near cliff walls, making him hard to spot.
  • The longer he stands still, the more armor pierce he gains, up to 5 stacks.

Weaknesses to Exploit

  • Has to aim for 2 seconds and stand still to be strong, very easy to get dived.
  • Only has Disengage Disengage to escape; once it’s used he’s easy to catch.
  • Basic attacks can’t crit, weak in close-range fights.
  • Squishy, melts very quickly under burst damage.
