Heroes That Counter Aoi

Aoi is a jungle assassin who thrives on terrain: Skill 2 Dragon Claw Dragon Claw fires her grapple into obstacles to dash or fly, stores up to 2 charges, and makes her CC-immune while moving this way. From the air, Skill 1 Dragon Slash Dragon Slash dives down to knock up a whole group and creates a shield, while on the ground it lunges forward and heals her when it hits enemies. Her ultimate Dragon's Wrath Dragon's Wrath sends her into the sky untargetable, sinks her claws in to slow, then dashes backward, dealing damage based on the target’s missing HP. Her passive Dragon's Blessing Dragon's Blessing empowers her attacks after each skill, and the 4th hit is a guaranteed critical. Aoi Aoi ‘s weaknesses are her squishy body and dependence on obstacles: in open areas or right after landing, she’s very vulnerable to hard CC and burst. Aoi’s most dangerous counters are Wonder Woman, Zuka, Wukong in the jungle, Omen, Airi in the Dark Slayer lane, Aleister, Raz in the mid lane, Arum, Thane in the support role and Stuart in the Abyssal Dragon lane.

Mail of Pain

Aoi deals continuous damage with her skills and the empowered attacks from Dragon's Blessing Dragon's Blessing , so the Backlash passive triggers a lot: every time you take damage, you reflect 5% of it back as true damage. Activating Retaliation raises the reflect to 25% for 3 seconds; pop it right as Aoi dives down and the squishy assassin will end up hurting herself badly.

Blade of Eternity

Aoi dives in, secures the kill, then dashes out with Dragon's Wrath Dragon's Wrath ; she has no time to stick around. Blade of Eternity’s revive passive brings you back after 2 seconds with 2100 – 3500 HP on the spot, usually when Aoi has already left or is on cooldown. It has a 150-second cooldown and can only trigger 2 times per match, so treat it as a survival item for physical-damage heroes that Aoi likes to target.

Arctic Orb

For mages targeted by Aoi: activate Seal to become invulnerable for 1.5 seconds, so the dive from Dragon Slash Dragon Slash and her chain of empowered attacks all hit nothing. When the seal ends you also gain a shield for 1 second. Pop it right as Aoi lands so your teammates have time to turn around and lock her down.

How to counter Aoi in 1v1 duels and teamfights

Pull fights into open ground: Dragon Claw Dragon Claw can only be launched at obstacles. In open areas away from cliffs and walls, Aoi Aoi loses her ability to charge in and fly, along with the CC immunity that comes with it.

CC her right as she lands: Don’t throw stuns while Aoi is airborne, since she’s CC immune then. Save your skills for the moment she dives down with Dragon Slash Dragon Slash or just finishes her ultimate.

Pick tanky heroes for 1v1s: In jungle duels, fighters with shields and healing like Zuka Zuka or Wonder Woman Wonder Woman can absorb the first burst and fight back. Her passive Dragon's Blessing Dragon's Blessing needs the 4th attack for a guaranteed crit, so don’t let Aoi land the full chain.

Stay close to your support: Marksmen and mages should stick to Arum Arum or Thane Thane so there’s CC to cover them when Aoi dives in, and place wards in the jungle to see which direction she’s coming from.

Tips for Countering Aoi

Strengths to Watch Out For

  • Skill 2 Dragon Claw Dragon Claw grants very high mobility and CC immunity while dashing or flying.
  • Her ultimate Dragon's Wrath Dragon's Wrath makes her untargetable while airborne, deals damage based on missing HP, then dashes away.
  • Her passive Dragon's Blessing Dragon's Blessing guarantees a critical hit on the 4th attack, bursting damage out very quickly.
  • Skill 1 Dragon Slash Dragon Slash knocks up a whole group while granting a shield or healing.

Weaknesses to Exploit

  • Needs obstacles to grapple onto; very immobile in open areas.
  • Loses CC immunity on landing, making her easy to hit with hard CC.
  • Squishy; hard to survive if locked down for a few seconds.
  • Deals purely physical damage, so she struggles against physical damage immunity and damage-reflect items.
